Astronomical League Observing Clubs: Outreach Awards
The concept is to award outreach just as the Astronomical League currently recognizes Observing Clubs (each Club offers a certificate based upon achieving certain observing goals), based on a number of outreach events and hours.

The first level is achieved when the following criteria is met:

  • A minimum of five 2-hour (minimum each outreach) outreach events
  • Document each event:
    • Date, time (started and ended), location
    • What you did for the outreach
    • Estimate of the number of people attending

  • Level 2: Astronomical League's Stellar Outreach Award
  • Level 3: Astronomical League's Master Outreach Award

0803 Outreach Event, for Village Meadows ES Wed., Feb 13, 18:30 - 21:00 Patterson Observatory, Sierra Vista, AZ 75+ First Qtr Moon, moonset after midnight. Mostly cloudy. Lunar observations mostly. Saw the ISS fly over.
0804 Outreach Event, Science Camp Wed., Feb. 20, 19:00 - 21:00 Huachuca Oaks Camp 40+ Full Moon, Total Lunar Eclipse! Totality from 20:01 to 20:51 p.m. MST. Some cloudiness but cleared in time to view the beautiful lunar eclipse. Saturn. M31. M42.
0805 Outreach Event, Science Camp Wed., Feb. 27, 19:00 - 21:00 Huachuca Oaks Camp 40+ Last Qtr Moon: moonrise after midnight. Clear. Saturn, Double Cluster, M42.
0806 PSP @ JBO Sat., Mar. 1, 18:00 (sunset at 18:20) - 21:30 Junk Bond Observatory (JBO), Sierra Vista, AZ 25+ 22-day old Moon, moonset at 12:27 (no Moon). Clear but upper-level turbulence. Mars. Saturn + 5 moons: Titan, Rhea, Helene, Enceladus, Tethys. M79. Horsehead Nebula (32-inch RC scope). M31. M32. Several galaxies. Owl Nebula (16-inch).
0807 Outreach Event , "Family Night" Wed., Mar. 5, 18:00 (sunset at 18:23) - 21:00 Sierra Vista Public Library 30+ 26-day old moon, moonset at 16:33. Highlights: Saturn, The Double Cluster (with a C14), M42 and M45.
0808 Outreach Event , "Book Fair " Thu., Apr. 3, 18:30 (sunset at 18:42) - 21:30 Myer Elem. School, Ft. Huachuca 100+ 26-day old moon, moonset at 16:22. Started windy; almost canceled, but the wind died and the seeing was spectacular! Saturn, M42, Double Cluster, etc.
0809 PSP @ PO "Saturn Watch" Fri., Apr. 11, 18:30 (sunset at 18:48) - 21:00 Patterson Observatory (PO), Sierra Vista, AZ 30 Not too many attendees due to competing community events. Saturn, of course. Lunar observing, Stargate Cluster, M3, double stars, etc.
0810 Outreach Event, Earth Day Sat., Apr. 19, 08:00 - 13:00 Sierra Vista, AZ 100+ Daytime event. Solar viewing only.
0811 Outreach Event, Ms. Delgado's Class Fri., May 2, 19:00 - 21:00 (sunset at 19:01) RGO, Palominas, AZ 36+ Last Qtr Moon: moonrise after midnight. Saturn. M51. Doouble Cluster.
0812 Outreach Event, Science Camp Wed., May 7, 18:30 - 20:30 Huachuca Oaks Camp 40+ Good sky. Comet Boattini was observed, along with the moon, Saturn, etc..
0813 11-Year-Old Scout Camporee April 25, 2008, 19:00 - 23:00 Palominas, AZ, LDS Scout Campground on the river. ~50 Facilitated their working on the Astronomy Merit badge. Iidentified five constellations, and their main star, observed three globular clusters, three galaxies, three open clusters, and three nebulas. Sky clear. Visibility was excellent. No light pollution.

HAC Member Participation—Award Level 2, Stellar Outreach Club
  • In addition to the (basic) Outreach Award, the Stellar Outreach recipients will need an additional fifty hours (minimum) in outreach events Again, document each event:
    • Date, time (started and ended), location What you did for the outreach
    • Estimate of the number of people attending
  • The recipient will "report" on one of his/her outreach events; these reports can be used in The Reflector and elsewhere to overview what amateurs are doing in Outreach and share ideas.

  • In addition to the Outreach and Stellar Outreach Awards, the Master Outreach recipients will need an additional one hundred hours (minimum) in outreach events As with the first two levels, document each event:
    • Date, time (started and ended), location What you did for the outreach
    • Estimate of the number of people attending
  • The Master Outreach Award nominee will report on what seems to work best for their outreach efforts; this can be specific activities, locations, etc. Like with the Stellar Outreach Award, these reports can be used in The Reflector.
